PFB

PFB

What is it?  Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, more commonly known as “razor bumps”. It is caused when hairs curl up beneath the skin surface, causing an inflamed lesion that often is accompanied by pain, irritation and PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation). The laser light superheats the curled-up hair shaft and the follicle, destroying both the source of inflammation and inflamed papules. The energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle and shaft to break it down. White blood cells then scavenge away the broken up tissue, AND break up hyperpigmented areas that may exist in the skin around PFB lesions.

What to expect during your consultation?

During the consultation, we will do a detailed assessment of the area and provide you with a possible treatment plan.  Our goal and obligation is to deliver results.  Therefore, unless we can help you achieve substantial improvement, we will recommend against starting the treatment.

The type of lasers that we use:

Aerolase NeoElite® is a NdYag laser that uses 1064nm wavelength, and a very short (650-microsecond) pulse duration, which minimizes the risk of side effects and allows for deeper penetration into the skin. Due to lower absorption of melanin, it is safer for darker skin types. It has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, including Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB).

The cost of treatments:

The cost per treatment ranges between $150-$200, depending on the size of the area. In rare situations, it could be slightly higher, due to the complexity and size of the area being treated.

Possible Side Effects:

Aerolase is a new laser technology that has been shown to be effective in treating PFB with fewer side effects than traditional lasers. There may be slight redness following the treatment and darkening of the pigment, which normally  subside after a few days.

Is it painful?

There is a mild sensation of heat that is very tolerable. This is one of the key technical breakthroughs of Aerolase technology. The Aerolase Neo Elite has set a new standard for virtually pain-free treatment, even on darker skin types, thanks to MicroPulse-1064 technology.

What’s next:

If you are not ready for a consultation just yet, we encourage you to simply reach out to us and we’ll gladly answer your questions.

What kind of progress you can expect:

Three (3) treatments in two (2) to three (3) week intervals are typically required for substantial improvement, but additional treatments may be required. Patients typically report noticeable clearance of the lesions after the first treatment. In general, hyperpigmentation tends to clear after the lesions are removed in part because the laser energy helps break up the pigment.
