What to Expect During Your Lumecca IPL Treatment

What to Expect:

During your treatment, we will use a handheld device to deliver pulses of light into the skin. You may feel a slight snapping sensation as the light is absorbed, but overall the treatment is comfortable with virtually no downtime. The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. You will see results after just one treatment, with optimal results typically achieved after a series of treatments.

How We Measure Your Results:

We use a Visia® digital skin analysis to track your progress. This non-invasive device uses sensors to measure different aspects of your skin, including wrinkles, pore size, pigmentation, redness, and UV damage. The results are then displayed on a computer screen, so we can see how your skin is changing over time. The Visia® digital skin analysis is an important part of our commitment to providing you with the best possible care. With this information, we can tailor our treatments to your specific needs and ensure that you are getting the most benefit from our services.

Cost:

IPL photofacial treatments can range in cost from $250 to $500, depending on the size of the area being treated and the overall severity of the problem. In general, larger areas or more severe conditions will require more treatments and, as a result, will be more costly. However, many people find that the results of an IPL photofacial are well worth the investment. In addition to improving the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, and fine lines, an IPL photofacial can also help to promote collagen production and even out skin tone.

Side Effects:

IPL Photofacial is safe for most people. The side effects are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days. The most common side effects are redness, swelling, and bruising. These usually improve within a few hours after the treatment. More rare side effects include blistering, changes in skin color, and burns. IPL Photofacial is safe for most people, but it is important to talk to a qualified medical provider before starting this treatment.

Before & After

FAQs

What is an IPL Photofacial

What is IPL? IPL is intense pulsed light therapy. This is an energy device and it’s a little different from lasers. It’s a very specific wavelength of light that’s going to help make our skin tone more even. It evens our complexion and helps eliminate dark spots from the skin

What areas of the body can we treat with an IPL?

IPL is an excellent treatment to use anywhere we have sun damage. Most typically my patients will have a treatment on their face, on their neck, on their chest, as well as their hands. But I have some patients who treat their shoulders or back as well as their arms. Anywhere where you have sun damage, you can benefit from an IPL treatment.

Is it painful?

There is a minimal amount of discomfort involved in IPL. It feels like a little rubber band on the skin. It’s very tolerable and most patients say that it’s not super painful, but there is a little minimal discomfort.

When will I see results?

After your treatment, your skin will be a little bit sensitive. Over the next several days, anywhere where there’s sun damage, the dark spots are going to turn darker until they look the color of coffee grounds. Those will flake off usually at about day three to day seven. After that, you’ll have your results from your treatment. However, you are going to see the best outcome after completing your series of three to five treatments. So although you’ll have some improvement after one treatment, it’s important to continue the full series.

What to avoid before the treatment?

Before your IPL treatment, it is very important to avoid the sun for at least two weeks. You also want to avoid using any harsh products on your skin for at least seven days that would be products like retinol, glycolic acids, and salicylic acids.

What to avoid after the treatment?

After your treatment, the most important thing is to avoid the sun. So you want to use a mineral sunscreen that’s going to have zinc and titanium dioxide in it, and you also want to wear a hat. So try to avoid the sun for at least two weeks. You also want to avoid using harsh products on the skin for at least three to five days.

What does a typical IPL consult entail?

First, we’ll do a skin analysis so either come without makeup or we will remove your makeup. We will do a VISIA® skin analysis, which takes really up close pictures to help us see signs of sun damage, pigmentation, and redness on the skin. Afterward, you’ll sit down with me and will do a consultation. I will learn about the skin care products you’re using to help optimize your skincare routine. We’ll talk about your goals and expectations and see if you are a good candidate for IPL therapy. I’ll answer any questions that you have. Then you’ll meet with one of our coordinators who will go over pricing and scheduling with you.

Who should perform my IPL treatment?

It is really important to see an experienced practitioner for your IPL treatment. If you see someone who’s inexperienced, they’re either going to be using low settings and you’re not going to get as much result or there’s a risk that they could give you a permanent burn or hyper or hypo pigmentation leaving white or dark spots on the skin. My advice is always to see a practitioner who has a lot of experience with the energy device.

Can IPL also get rid of my hair?

There are multiple IPL devices on the market these days. There are some that are designed to help eliminate hair and can be used similarly to a laser hair removal treatment. The Lumecca IPL is not intended for hair removal. However, it can kill some of the hair follicles. So when I’m treating males who want to wear a beard, I do not treat any of the facial hair areas.
