Otoplasty Ear Contouring

Otoplasty is a medical term for cosmetic ear surgery. The procedure is intended to help restructure the ears and address concerns with the size, shape, and overall contour of the ears. This may be an ideal procedure for patients who have ears that are noticeably large or stick out, in comparison to other features.

For younger patients, this may affect self-esteem growing up and might even cause discomfort when lying down or wearing hats and headgear. Otoplasty can correct cosmetic ear concerns to help deliver a more symmetrical result that helps to balance a patient’s appearance.

Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty should be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon who has extensive training in head and neck surgery. Dr. Troiano offers this procedure to patients at her facility in the Palm Beach area. At her facility, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia so patients will feel no pain.

Incisions will be made along the backs of the ears. Structural changes will be made and the incisions carefully closed. This usually takes about an hour.

Patients who have ears that stick out, are too big or don’t suit their facial profile often find that they are more self-conscious of their appearance such as being embarrassed to wear their hair in any way that reveals their ears. It is a very noticeable feature and can cause distress for some, especially in children and teens.
Otoplasty can address these concerns and deliver a natural-looking result that works with your facial structure and contours. Many patients who undergo the procedure feel it was worth it and has improved their quality of life.
The cost of otoplasty will vary for everyone, as the procedure is carefully tailored to suit each patient’s unique needs. The final price will factor in things like the cost of Dr. Troiano and her team and the extent of treatment required.
Otoplasty procedures can be performed on adults over the age of 18 who want to correct cosmetic imperfections with their ears. It may also be performed on young children of at least five years of age. This is generally decided among parents and their pediatricians.
Cosmetic surgery is generally considered an elective procedure, which is not covered by health insurance. It may be medically necessary for some patients, but this will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Dr. Troiano does not currently accept insurance. However, Dr. Troiano and her team can provide you with the documentation, and the codes needed to be reimbursed by the insurance company if this is the path you choose to take.

Otoplasty surgery can offer many benefits to patients, including the ability to reposition or restructure the upper parts of the ears. Otoplasty reduces the prominence of the ears and reshapes the ear cartilage to achieve natural contours.

Cosmetic surgery is a big commitment, as many of its procedures have lasting or permanent effects. This is true with otoplasty and cosmetic ear contouring procedures that change the structure of the ear cartilage to deliver the desired result.

Otoplasty procedures are performed using carefully administered local anesthesia to ensure that patients are comfortably asleep and thus feel no pain for discomfort during surgery. After the procedure, it is common to feel pressure, discomfort, and have some swelling in the area. Patients will be given advice on how to manage these symptoms, such as using cold compresses and taking pain medication. The ears will be wrapped with a head wrap that will stay in place for at least 1 week.
